The old internet

I was born in 2005 so I didn’t really experience the early web. Nevertheless the web when I was growing up was still very different from how it is today. I have recently been doing some research into the old web and while I may not have been around for it, I get a strange sense of nostalgia for it.

Web Design and Apple

A great resource I found was the web design museum, which is a fantastic collection of archived web pages from the 90s and 2000s. Some of the more popular ones include Apple’s old websites.
One that sticks out to me is their page in 1996, which visually is just so appealing! One thing to note is how much the site changed from 2005-2015. Compare this with the 2015 to 2025 and I find not that much has changed. If you were to ask me to pick one I would most certainly choose the design from 2005. It may not have been flashy but it is slick and clean and very rich in character. MacOS X Tiger is in a similar vein and for me I don’t see why that design had to ever be retired…

Neocities

On my journeys I have also found neocities, a network of over a million and a half personal websites. Looking through their catagogue I feel a sense of great excitement, like I’m using the internet for what it was really meant for.
Neocities is also where I discovered possibly my favourite website ever!! which is ribo.zone. A massive thank you to them because they have some incredible resources on web development in this style. Whoever made that website is incredibly talented so please pay them a visit!
